Types of plastic
Plastic is extremely versatile: depending on the manufacturing process and additives, the material can be solid, temperature resistant or chemical resistant. Because plastics can be manufactured with many different properties, this material is now found in almost every product. The five most widespread types of plastic are used for our containers, wheels and castors.
Polyethylene (PE)
Characteristics:
- Smooth surface
- Resistant to many acids and alkalis
- Temperature resistant from –40 °C to +80 °C, although some manufacturers specify slightly different values.
Please observe the specifications we provide. - High density polyethene: rigid, difficult to bend
- Low density polyethylene: flexible, easy to bend
Polypropylene (PP)
Characteristics:
- Harder than polyethylene
- Better shape-retaining properties than polyethylene when warm
- Can be used in boiling water for brief periods
- Temperature resistant from –20 °C to +90 °C, although some manufacturers specify slightly different values. Please observe the specifications we provide.
Polystyrene (PS)
Characteristics:
- Glossy surface
- Hard and brittle
- Sensitive to impact and puncture
- Temperature resistant from 0 °C to +50 °C. Again, please observe the specifications we provide.
Nylon (PA)
Characteristics:
- Ease of movement on smooth floors due to low rolling resistance
- Hardwearing, and therefore durable
- Non-marking
- Shatterproof
- Hygienic
- Largely resistant to acids and alkaline solutions
Polyurethane (PU)
Characteristics:
- High max. load
- Quiet running
- Hardwearing and cut resistant
- Durable
- Oil and grease resistant
- Largely resistant to acids and alkaline solutions
