Foam padding and foam film: packaging with all round protection

Packaging that is protected by foam padding made of foam film or foam panels doesn’t stand a chance of being bumped, scratched or damaged. Whether on a roll or ready to use: when it comes to padding, foam offers the highest level of protection in the packaging sector.

What do I use which foam padding or foam padding film for?

Foam can be moulded into any shape and is therefore ideal for filling, cushioning and protecting items. Depending on the item being sent and the cardboard box or postal packaging you use, the right foam padding makes other filling material superfluous.

• Foam padding film in different thicknesses can be used to wrap a wide range of goods with a thin but effective, impact resistant layer. It can also be used as an intermediate layer for several products, or to protect furniture surfaces from scratches and other damage. If you opt for new, sustainable types, foam film is easy to recyclable.


• Foam panels form a thick protective layer. They can be cut to size individually and therefore be used to divide a package into different compartments, for example, all of which are padded. These panels are also ideal for lining cardboard boxes or containers.


• A special surface mean egg crate foam sheets not only provide protection from impacts, but also from slippage. The characteristic edges are suitable for anything that is particularly fragile or sensitive.


• Protective foam netting is a protective mesh for all long items – from bottles to cylinder components. The net distributes impact forces uniformly across the surface and thereby significantly reduces the risk of damage.


• Packaging foam in a bag is a literal cushion for all bulky, heavy goods that require protection. Simply place it between two bags and the goods will be perfectly positioned in the package.

What do I need to pay attention to when packing with foam film?

A lot helps a lot? Not necessarily. If efficient material use and workflows throughout the entire packaging process are important factors for you, you will benefit on all levels: organisationally, financially and in terms of customer satisfaction.

Examine how many packages you typically send and experiment with different combinations of cardboard and cushioning material. The goal: find the smallest possible packaging unit that optimally protects the contents.

There is a very practical way to find out what this is: wrap a reject or dummy product in the thinnest or most economical foam film possible and put it in a suitable cardboard box. Drop this package. If something breaks, work your way up in terms of foam thickness and give studded foam a try instead of smooth sheets, for example.

What’s more, there’s a clever way to combine several padding materials with each other:

• Printed circuit boards or small components are first stowed in bubble wrap bags before being placed in a small cardboard box with an additional foam sheet if required.


• A set of bottles with protective foam netting usually does not require any further padding material when placed in a special bottle box.


• Foam is a good impact protector, but if moisture is the biggest enemy of the products you send, padding the most important first layer for moisture protection.
